Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.
-- Proverbs 23 verse 4 (Kings James Bible)
Consider the source. The wealthiest man of his day is
giving us instructions and warnings on the dangers of
working hard and sacrificing all for the sake of riches.
He firmly understood the illusion that riches portray,
giving deceptive impressions to the mind and senses of
something it is not. He also knew how easily it could all
take flight with no guarantee of its return, regardless of
how long or what it took to obtain.
Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for
riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as
an eagle toward heaven. -- Proverbs 23 verse 5.
God gave Solomon tremendous wealth with the
awesome wisdom needed to go along with it. For our
advantage and well-being, God has given us the
privilege of studying and learning from that wisdom, but
only if we so choose to do so.
May God’s Word lead our way each day.
